Friday Favorites: Beauty Products

Every Friday we are going to share some of our favorites and today it is all about beauty products. Some of our favorite blog posts are ones in which we get tips and tricks to try. As beauty product junkies we love getting recommendations on what to try so without further ado here are our picks.

Wen’s Picks

These three products are always in my drawer or handbag. They’re a higher price point, but definitely worth checking out during Sephora’s 20% sale they hold a few times a year.

#1: Diorshow Mascara in Black

Wen beauty 1

Diorshow has been around for years. It was my first non-drugstore mascara purchase and it’s been love every since. Last year they did a redesign and it’s better than ever. The brush is the perfect size with the right amount of product, doesn’t clump or smudge and gives your lashes the volume they need for everyday wear.

#2: Dior Addict Lip Glow in Sheer Pink

wen beauty 2

Dior Addict Lip Glow in sheer pink is a great combo of color and enhancing your natural lips. It’s more color than a chapstick, but still sheer, hydrating and provides a bit of SPF protection.

#3: Urban Decay Naked Flushed Palette in Naked

wen beauty 3

I like the Flushed palette in Naked (comes in three colors). In this palette you get a bronzer, blush, and highlighter that can all be blended together for the sun-kissed look you’ll be craving in January. The colors are pigmented but blend well to create the look you’re going for whether its day or night. I really like the bronzer as it is a bit more matte and not shimmery. The blush is not too pink, more of a neutral that allows for everyday wear. The highlighter adds some shimmer for those nights out. I love the size as it’s perfect for travel or throwing in my handbag when I know I’m going to need to reapply when I’m running from work to an after work meeting or an impromptu night out.

Jen’s Picks

Hi, my name is Jen and I am a product junkie. My brother got me a Birchbox subscription last August as a little gift and he has yet to cancel it (shhhh don’t tell him) so I get fun little gifts every month!! My counter is very cluttered with every brand under the sun. I will say that I tend to always wander back to Clinique as a tried and true.

#1 Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer

jen beauty 1

The one thing I have learned when it comes to makeup is that having a great primer will help your makeup last longer and look better when applied. I really like how smooth this makes my face and it helps take away shine without making my skin too matte. Plus, I can pick it up anywhere.

#2: Clinique True Bronze Pressed Powder

jen beauty 2

Bronzer is a must for me, I never tan I am pale pretty much year round so the only way I get some color and look fresh is with makeup. This bronzer works great and lasts awhile. It has a little shimmer but not overpowering.

#3: Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel in Medium

jen beauty 3

This little gem came in a Birchbox and prior to using this I didn’t really do anything with my eyebrows besides plucking. Game changer! It helps sculpt your brows, fill in less full spots and just give your eyes a total pop. I find if I don’t want to wear a lot of eye makeup and just use this, my face looks more put together. Super easy too use and buildable so you don’t end up with heavy and thick eyebrows.

So there you have, our favorites and we would love to know yours! Comment below!!

Date Night: Restaurant Picks

date-night

If you are like us date nights can be hard to come by these days. After working and chasing kids around all day, most nights it is barely all we can do to brush our teeth before bed. On the rare occasion that we manage to leave the house in clothes that aren’t used as a Kleenex, here is where we like to visit. We recommend reservations at most places.

Italian

Steak and Fish

Asian Inspired

And if you want to dine outside, check out our picks here.

So go out and enjoy some adult time!!

You made it to the weekend

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU NEED TO COOL OFF

Did you see the weather report for the weekend? Looks like a pool day is on the agenda. We’ve put together a list of the area pools, splash pads and beaches for you to take advantage of on these hot days.

WHERE TO GO IF YOU LIKE BEER

Drive over to Long Grove and drink all the craft beers. 18 of them.

WHERE TO GO IF FESTIVAL FOODS ARE STILL CALLING YOUR NAME

You’re in luck! Two areas have their annual festivals going on through the weekend. Island Lake has fireworks on Saturday evening and McHenry has a family fun day on Sunday.

WHAT TO WATCH WHEN YOU REFUSE TO LEAVE THE HOUSE
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”
It’s new to DVD or streaming and it’s action packed, with a side of eye candy (hello, Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill).

SUMMER SIPS

Hot days call for cold drinks, so we’ll be sipping on some Easy White Sangria. The recipe is easy to make and the drink goes down easy. Since it has fruit in it, it makes us feel healthy-ish.

Cheers,
Jen & Wen

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Ok ladies, it is time; we might as well add a national holiday, it is the Cardholder’s Early Access to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. So if you don’t have a Nordstrom card, get one. You can link it and make it a debit card if you don’t want another credit card.

Jen’s Picks

Shoes, Nordstrom is known for their shoe department.

These were the first ones in my cart. I ordered the Khaki Suede but all the colors look really fun.

Nordstrom also has a lot of great jewelry on sale. I am a big fan of Kendra Scott and tend to wear her pieces in a regular rotation. I snagged me this little beauty as well in the Black Mother of Pearl. It seems like it will be a great neutral that I can wear with lots of different outfits. These make great gifts (I already grabbed another for a gift)

I also really like my Kate Spade glitter studs that I got at the anniversary sale last year (I got the multi color and it goes with everything!), and lucky to you the mini version is on sale this year. I actually think I might like the mini better, so maybe I should add those to my cart too!

Jean shopping could be the hardest thing on the planet (except for the dreaded swimsuit shopping!!). I have found a brand that I really like and is actually reasonably priced, especially from Nordstrom. Wit and Wisdom is my jam. I thought I would try these grey jeans, so I of course added them to the cart. I will note that they are a mid rise which when I ordered my first pair of Wit and Wisdom I was nervous about but it does a lovely job of sucking it all in (and who doesn’t need that?).

The next item I can’t take credit for finding, but rather my girl Sheaffer introduced me to this gem. She affectionately calls it the “blardigan” and let me tell you the name suits it perfectly. Part blanket, part cardigan. It is so soft even my kids want to wear it….. I wear it YEAR ROUND, yes, even in the summer because sometimes the air conditioning is cold! I have the regular blardigan but I am going to give some not so subtle hints that I want the baby version as a Christmas present 😉

Blardigan:

I have the grey and can confirm that it does stretch a bit after wearing but it doesn’t stretch out (if that makes sense!). Coziest thing ever!!

Wen’s Picks

After taking one of all of Jen’s items here are my favorite finds from the anniversary sale.

I’m loving this Chelsea28 cardigan. The fit looks perfect for throwing on over a tee and jeans. (P.S. anyone wanting to buy this for Jen, feel free!!)

wen card

Since I tend to wear blazers and cardigans often, I’m always on the hunt for a great top that pairs well. I like the v-neck and length of this Trouve tank.

So jeans. So hard. So needed. I’m loving the grey jeans Jen picked out to mix things up a bit, and for a regular pair, I’m going to give these Mavi’s a try. I love that they are in lengths since I’m short and need everything altered.

For something fun, yet still practical, I’ve been looking to get a phone wristlet instead of carrying a handbag when heading out for running errands or a night out on the town. Because lets be real sometimes you just don’t want sippy cups and goldfish in your bag….

wen wristlet

And just for fun, here is what happens when we shop the anniversary sale, we end up showing up wearing the same outfit! (Our exact color isn’t available but find our Lush tunic  and Jen’s necklace)

Happy Shopping,
